Passenger side
Here’s that picture of my rotted chassis rail I promised you a while back. It’s worse than it was last time I was under the car.
Driver side
The other side isn’t quite as advanced, but it isn’t far behind.
At least it’s clean and shiny on the outside… (it’s on stands because I rotated the tires today.)

Ah, so I’m not alone.

That can’t be good. :(

Time to get out the angle grinder!

That seems beyond dangerous.

We all float down here.

That’s bad.

You are not wrong.

There would be nothing left. Seriously looking into an Exocet or something similar. But that much money could but a good car.

If not for the rust, this car would be in fantastic shape. Unfortunately, it’s unavoidable for old Mazdas in the Great Lakes area.

Is this common on the NB? Love the color combo, btw.

An Exocet is a good car.

for Michigan lives in Ohio? What lies are these?

Not for daily driving in NW Ohio. Now with body panels and actual weather protection, I’d be all for it. I’d love to do something along the lines of a Lotus 7 or Morgan 4/4 with the drivetrain.

Unfortunate fact of life. I’ll get back home some day.

It’s more than common. Even NB’s from saltless states will develop rust there eventually.
The 01 SE is perfect. BRG paint with tan top and interior and wood trim. 6-speed trans, sport suspension package, and LSD.

You’re telling me.

[prolonged screaming]
You drive that on the *street*?
![]() 01/26/2018 at 20:32 |

Ugh, that’s sad. I basically want to say sorry for your loss.
![]() 01/26/2018 at 20:32 |

Haha oh man that’s actually worse than mine. If you still feel safe driving it and haven’t had any issues I’m definitely going to ignore mine forever. I’m in socal now so it shouldn’t keep rusting, or at least it will go a lot slower. I hate how bad NBs rust in that spot and how clean the rest of the car can be.
![]() 01/26/2018 at 21:34 |

Not even just old Mazdas. It seems like so many of them develop rust issues - especially the Protege and Mazda 3.

I know, my other car is a 3.
![]() 01/26/2018 at 22:12 |

I don’t. It’s a death trap. If I were ever to get in an accident, I’d be in serious trouble.
![]() 01/26/2018 at 22:21 |

That’s just the echo of the unceasing internal scream that has been reverberating in my head for months.
My reliable, boring, structurally intact hatchback has been off the road with suspension issues for months. If I could be driving that instead, I would be.

That’s honestly a clean enough car that if there wasn’t any other rust i’d consider actually replacing the frame rails.

:(

The rust is everywhere. Sills, rails, doors, quarters. And there’s bad Bondo on the rockers and quarters with a lousy respray on top of it. I think the hood and trunk are only clean because they’re aluminum.

Yeah this is also why I daily my Miata less. Even with solid frame rails it’s not like the car is super safe in traffic. My Subaru would certainly keep me much safer in most situations, plus the Miata only has liability so I’d get nothing for it and worry about it being ruined by an idiot.

:( that’s depressing. I badly want a 01SE. BRG is just the right color for miatas.
